Davis School District is hosting Voices of a Nation: Student Perspectives on 250 Years of America, a districtwide speaking event aligned with America 250 Utah.
Students from every school and grade level are invited to apply to deliver an original speech about America’s past, present or future.
Selected students will receive mentorship and take the stage on May 4, 2026, at the Davis Instructional Services Center in Layton. The event will be professionally produced and live streamed for the community.
You don’t have to be famous to have something worth saying.

Sunset Elementary school counselor Allison Barben has become an integral part of our Sunset Elementary community. Her journey to becoming a staff member at Sunset Elementary was inspired by the supportive and family-like atmosphere she experienced while subbing at the school.
"When I became a school counselor, it felt less intimidating to me to come here because I knew I would have a lot of support from admin and staff," Barben shared. She proudly describes the school as "small but mighty," highlighting the excellent teachers, dedicated staff and hardworking students.
One of Barben’s most memorable moments at Sunset Elementary is witnessing the students develop empathy, compassion and effective communication skills.
"It's always rewarding for me to see our students treat themselves and others with kindness and learn how to effectively communicate," she said. Barben believes that these skills are as integral to their education as the academic lessons they receive daily.
As a mother of three, Barben’s passion for helping children learn and grow is deeply personal. She stays motivated by remembering the uniqueness of each child and the importance of meeting them where they are.
"I try to remember that each child is unique and it's important to 'meet them where they are at' rather than wish they were different," she explained.
Barben finds immense joy in working with her students, cherishing the smiles, hugs and high fives she receives daily.
"There is a lot of JOY in elementary school, and our students are excited to be here, have a smile on their face and are as happy to see me as I am to see them!" she exclaimed.
Her advice to those considering a career in education is both encouraging and realistic.
Reflecting on her own experience of returning to school at age 40 to earn her Master's degree, Barben said, "I wanted to make a difference, and I wanted to help kids. I would encourage people to have a career in education for those same reasons. It can be challenging work, but also hugely rewarding!"
